The Miami City Commission gave its approval for the Marlins new ballpark today (March 19), moving the project one step closer to construction.
The Miami-Dade County Commission is scheduled to vote on the agreements during a meeting that begins at 1 p.m., Monday, March 23. If approved by the county, the project will be ready to begin construction this summer. The project is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs annually during construction and support more than 2,700 jobs once in operations.
The future home of the Marlins will be a first-class baseball stadium that will be owned by Miami-Dade County. It will be constructed on approximately 17 acres of the historic 42-acre Orange Bowl site. The ballpark will have a retractable roof, a natural grass playing field, 37,000 seats, including approximately 3,000 club seats and 60 private suites. The team will change its name to the Miami Marlins prior to the completion of the new Miami Marlins ballpark in 2012.
